What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing (sometimes called ‘sensory integration’ or ‘SI’) is a term that refers to the way the brain receives messages from the sensory receptors such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin, and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses.

Sensory  Processing Disorder: Children who have difficulty processing sensory information have what is known as Sensory Processing Disorder.

Red Flags

A child with difficulties in Sensory Processing might:

  • Have poor attention
  • Demonstrate inappropriate behavior
  • Be overly active or very lethargic and lack in speed of activity
    Have difficulties in learning and retaining learned skills
  • Is unable to comfortably manage self in crowds or group settings
  • Have delayed communication and social skills
  • Have poor sleep patterns
  • Display restricted eating habits or is a picky eater
  • Have poor body awareness
